The university is located in the historically and culturally famous city—the City of Xianyang with two campuses: Weicheng campus and Qindu campus, covering an area of more than 549,333 square meters of land with the practicum and training base being more than 1,766,666 square meters and the residing area being over 500,000 square meters. The university now enrolls students from 28 provinces (municipalities directly under the central government) and autonomous regions. More than 18,000 students reside on the campus, including exchange students from overseas.

The university is made up of 17 schools (departments) and 33 research institutions. There are currently 51 undergraduate majors, of which 27 majors are teacher-training ones and 24 non-teacher-training ones. All the majors cover such nine disciplines as literature, science, history, law, pedagogy, economics, engineering, administration and art. In 2017, the university was approved as a construction unit for master’s degree granting, and in 2018, the university was approved as a construction unit of “First-class Applied Undergraduate Institute in Shaanxi Province”, and in 2019, it was approved for the national action immersion plan of sports and aesthetic education. Currently the university has one pilot project of comprehensive reformation of majors at national level, one first-class major at national level, one demonstration project of ideological and political instruction integrated in a course, twelve provincial first-class majors at provincial level, eight prominent and distinctive majors at provincial level, four pilot projects of comprehensive reformation of majors at provincial level, 52 educational reform projects, teaching achievement awards and excellent textbook awards at provincial level, 26 classic resource-sharing courses at provincial level, 15 undergraduate courses at provincial level, seven curriculum demonstration courses for ideological and political instruction in a course, together with innovation and entrepreneurship education courses, teacher education online open courses, high-quality online open courses at provincial level, as well as six teaching teams at provincial level. There are nine provincial-level new engineering research and practice projects, provincial-level new liberal arts research and practice projects and “1+X” certificate pilot university projects, six provincial-level off-campus innovation and entrepreneurship practice education bases and provincial-level experimental zones for talent training mode innovation, 11 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers and provincial-level off-campus practice education bases, 461 college student innovation and entrepreneurship training programs at provincial level or above, and more than 2,000 awards from various academic competitions at provincial and ministerial levels.

The number of faculty and staff is 1,300, of whom more than 400 are high-ranking professionals including professors and associate professors. Faculty members with PhDs and Masters take up more than 90%. Three teachers enjoy special allowances from the State Council. Over 50 teachers are honored one or more of the following awards: Shannxi Provincial Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions, “Shaanxi Talents”, Young and Middle-aged Leading Talents in Science and Technology Innovation, Assessment Experts of Science and Technology Prize, or became members of Social Science League, etc. Three teachers have gained the reputations as national outstanding teachers or teachers with high morality. 28 teachers have gained the reputations as Provincial-level Excellent Teachers, Famous Teachers or Teachers with the Title of Paragons of Morality. Eight teachers have gained one or more of the following reputations: Xianyang Municipal Trans-century Leading Talents in Academics and Technology, Top Talents in Science and Technology, Experts with Outstanding Contributions, and Three-Five Talents.

In recent years, the university has hosted 49 national-level research projects, and 436 provincial-level or ministerial-level projects. The faculty members have published more than 5,400 papers in domestic and international academic journals, including more than 900 papers in core journals and more than 300 papers in SCI and EI. The following disciplines are gaining a measure of favorable advantages, such as History of China (Historical Geography), which is an advantageous course at provincial level. “The Research Center of Mausoleum Culture in Ancient Times in Central Shaanxi Plain” is the key research base of philosophy and social sciences for Shaanxi (colleges and universities). Shaanxi Provincial Social Sciences Popularization Base, Shaanxi Provincial Research Society for Wu Mi, and Shaanxi Provincial Research Society for Liu Guyu were set up in the university. Also established in the university were Teacher Training Center of Xianyang City and Yangling Demonstration Zone, Xianyang City Cadre Training and Education Base, Xianyang Development Research Academy, and Jingyang Fu Tea Culture Research and Dissemination Center.

The university library is rich in collection, with 1,900,000 copies of books and 10,033 kinds of distinctive bibliography. Journal of Xianyang Normal University was initiated in 1986. It has obtained the awards of “An Excellent Journal of Social Science in Colleges and Universities in China”, “Prize of Excellent Editing and Publishing” of Shaanxi Province as well as “Prize for University Journals of Social Science in China for Their Excellent Columns”. Among the columns, the column of “Study of Culture and History of Qin and Han Dynasties” has consecutively won the award for university journals of social science in Shaanxi and China for their excellent columns”. Research on Qin and Han Dynasties, influential in China in terms of cultural studies of Qin and Han dynasties, is compiled and published by the university.

The university adheres to the policy of running the university openly and has established friendly and cooperative relationships with more than 100 institutions of higher education, scientific research institutes and organizations from 27 countries, such as the United States, Germany, Australia, South Korea, Japan as well as those from Hong Kong and Taiwan. More than 1,000 students and teachers have been to the Philippines or Thailand respectively as volunteers of teaching Chinese, have been to teach in kindergartens in Singapore, and have been to Dong-A University in South Korea for peripatetic study. The “2+2” and “3+1” double-degree, Master or PhD programs provide students with the opportunity to go to the United States and South Korea to pursue their degrees. The university has appointed more than 100 foreign teachers from 10 countries to teach at the university. The number of overseas students in the university totals over several hundred.

Over the past 40 years, the university has been fully implementing the Party’s education policy, and has adhered to moral education as the fundamental requirement. The university has supplied more than 110,000 senior application-oriented talents for the society with a large number of graduates being the backbone of the government administrative departments, enterprises, institutions, institutions of higher education as well as institutes of scientific research. The university has gained consecutive reputations as “Advanced National Collective for Oral and Written Language Promotion”, “Outstanding National Collective for Social Practice”, and  “National Language Standardization Demonstration School”, “Civilized Campus” in Shaanxi Province, “Gardenlike Institution” in Shaanxi Province, “Managing-School-by-Law Demonstration School” in Shaanxi Province, “Advanced Grassroots Party Committee” “The Advanced Collegiate-Level Party Committee” in Shaanxi Provincial Educational System, “Peaceful and Secure Campus”, and so on. In 2021, the university was approved as a reserve institution for quality teacher training colleges and universities in the 14th Five-Year Plan for the promotion of a strong education nation. In April 2022, it was selected as one of the participating universities in the collaborative quality improvement plan of teacher education of the Ministry of

Education, and in May, it was selected as one of the supported units in collaboration between Jiangsu and Shaanxi, and in June, it was identified as a pilot unit in Shaanxi Province to deepen the education evaluation reform in the new era.
